For infants, they are used to elevate certain spots of your infant’s sleeping area and to help with issues such as breathing problems and reflux. You may find though, that your baby is rolling off of the sleeping wedge in the crib, here are five easy fixes for this problem.

Make sure the sleeping wedge is under the sheet

If the sleeping wedge is not under the mattress cover or sheet the wedge will move around the crib due to the movements of your baby. Also depending on the type of material of the mattress cover or sheet and the sleeping wedge itself, the result of either being a slippery material will also contribute to the sleeping wedge moving in the crib and as a result, causing your child to roll down the wedge.baby sleep 🔥how to baby sleep for

To prevent this, make sure that the sleeping wedge is under the mattress cover. With the sleeping wedge under the mattress cover, it will be secure and therefore will not move around causing your child to roll down to the flat end of the mattress.

It is also important to note that sleeping wedges (depending on the type of wedge) are purposely supposed to be kept under the mattress cover or sheet, this is because having the sleeping wedge above the mattress and in the open increases the risk of your baby suffocating.A baby could suffocate in this situation by getting its head and face caught between the wedge and the mattress.

Raise your crib instead

Instead of using a sleep wedge you may find it helpful to raise your crib. Some parents recommend that you raise one end of the crib or mattress to prevent the rolling of your child.  A good recommendation is that you can use books to raise your crib by placing your preference of books under the crib’s legs on one end. The amount of books and the thickness of such is determined by you and the needs of elevation and evenness. If you choose this option make sure that the books you are using are not flimsy. They should be sturdy, with hard covers and a thick appearance. Great books that I would recommend are old dictionaries and encyclopedias.baby sleep ⭐️how to baby sleep for

This may take some safe experimenting but some sources say that four inches is a good incline height. Start out low and if the problem with breathing or reflux stays the same slightly increase the height of one end of the crib. Remember to do this safely and always see your child’s pediatrician before making any decisions.

Check the size of your child’s sleeping wedge

The reason your baby may be consistently rolling down their sleeping wedge is because the incline is too steep for them in their sleep. As stated before it is important that you always check with your child’s pediatrician to determine if your child needs a sleeping wedge or another sleeping alternative due to health. Your baby’s doctor will be able to tell you if you do need a sleeping wedge, the proper inclination level needed to best help your child. If you choose to change the amount of incline that your wedge has be aware that if you go too far down that your child’s breathing or reflux problem will come forward again.

Anti-roll safe sleep swaddlers are available

Reste easily secures to your mattress and baby with Velcro

Another way to prevent your child from rolling down and off their sleeping wedge is to secure them on their back with a swaddle blanket made of Velcro. A sleeping wedge is wonderful, but babies can tend to slide down them if no guard is offered. I managed to find this Tranquilo Safe Sleep Swaddler by Reste that easily secures to your mattress and baby with Velcro. It fits standard size crib mattresses and mini-mattresses. The swaddler reduces the risk of rolling over, falling or climbing out of the crib. It is very comfortable and is able to be adjusted to the best comfort for your child. No harmful chemicals were used in making this swaddle and another perk is that this is travel-friendly. Reste is made from cotton and is machine washable.

If you are having trouble keeping your child from rolling down their wedge, perhaps you should consider in investing a different wedge such as this one. There are many different types of wedges that are made, you will find that some have a negative connotation behind them due to possible safety situations for your child. Always make sure to do background checks and look at reviews before you make any decisions.

Do It Yourself

Finally, if you find that the sleeping wedge you presently have for your baby is not working out, and you do not want to buy a new one, there are ways you can DIY (Do It Yourself) a secure anchor for your child so they will not roll down. Depending on how thick or thin your sheet is for your mattress you could create a guard for your child using a towel under the mattress. What I have seen other parents do is they will roll a towel and create a “U” formation. To do this they roll a towel down its width so the towel is long and thin, next they create a “U” formation at the base of the wedge, then they situate the baby so their legs are hanging over the bottom of the U and their bum is secure. They will use the ends of the towel and situate them under the arms of the baby. It is always recommended that you do not add anything to your babies crib because it could increase the risk of suffocation, this is why I recommend placing the towel under the sheet or mattress pad, this way it does not put your baby at risk and it may help create a solution to your problem.
